Since 1995, Poseidon Water has been a leader in the development of water treatment and reclamation projects using a public-private partnership approach. As world populations continue to grow, communities are left searching for innovative ways to secure access to clean water and, at the same time, effectively dispose of wastewater and Poseidon answers this need with innovative solutions.
We use a Public-Private Partnership approach
Poseidon’s approach involves a detailed, up-front contracting that assigns clear responsibilities and optimizes risk allocation process among public water authorities, industrial water users, capital providers and other project participants. This partnering process is tailored to meet the requirements of each individual project. The result: a well-defined project development roadmap – accountability of roles – turnkey project delivery – improved cost control – and more predictable project performance over the long term. We obtain all project entitlements
Early in the development cycle, our team develops a comprehensive strategy to secure all required federal, state and local permits, licenses and entitlements and to earn local community support.
We negotiate long-term water purchase agreements
Poseidon’s partnership agreements provide for an equitable sharing of project capital and operating costs based on the output and performance of the project. The result: long-term water price predictability over the entire term of the contract. The customer pays only for water actually delivered.
We procure best-fit technology for each project need
Using our extensive experience and expertise deploying industry-leading water treatment solutions, we adopt a technology-neutral, tailored approach that optimizes costs and performance for each site.
We use best-in-class contractors and operator
We maintain close, non-exclusive relationships with industry-leading service and process providers, contractors, engineering professionals, and plant operators. Our extensive network enables us to offer tailor-made solutions to address the unique challenges of each project our team undertakes.
We arrange project debt financing
Our careful approach to risk management enables capital-efficient project finance on a non-recourse basis to customers and Poseidon. We have a demonstrated track record of securing investment-grade ratings for such financings. We evaluate financing sources and select the combination that offers best value based on project circumstances. For our recent Carlsbad project, for example, Poseidon raised more than $500M in tax-exempt private activity bonds and $200M in non-recourse revenue bonds issued through the California Pollution Control Financing Authority.
We invest project equity and provide project management
In many projects, we play a dual role as equity investor as well as project manager under a long-term Management Services Agreement. In today’s era of limited budgets, this approach helps water utilities to conserve and optimize their use of scarce capital and personnel resources. Equity may be contributed by PW’s parent, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, L.P.
We possess intellectual property for desalination co-location with power plants
We hold US Patent # 6,946,081 covering desalination systems co-located with power plants or other thermal generating sources, as well as other existing and pending patents.
