Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Facility Receives Prestigious Grand Award in Engineering

Carlsbad, CA – Today, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) honored Poseidon Water with a Grand Award for their excellence in engineering on the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Facility. The award was presented at ACEC’s 50th Anniversary Engineering Excellence Awards Gala on April 25 in Washington, D.C. Poseidon CEO, Carlos Riva was there to accept the prestigious award, alongside representatives from Arcadis, the design and engineering consultant on the plant.

“The Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Facility is the largest, most technologically advanced, energy efficient, and environmental sound seawater desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere and we’re proud to be recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies for its success,” said Carlos Riva, CEO of Poseidon Water. “On behalf of Poseidon Water and our partner the San Diego County Water Authority, we are honored to receive the Grand Award in engineering.”

The ACEC evaluated all projects based on uniqueness and originality, as well as technical, economic, and social value. The Carlsbad Plant produces over 50 million gallons of high quality drought-proof drinking water to San Diego County residents every day. To reduce energy consumption at the Plant, Poseidon employs 144 state-of-the-art energy recovery devices that are able to save an estimated 146 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy per year and reduce carbon emissions by 42,000 metric tons annually – a saving roughly equivalent to removing 9,000 passenger vehicles from the roads.

The Carlsbad Desalination Plant is the result of a 30-year Water Purchase Agreement between the Plant’s developer and owner, Poseidon Water, and the San Diego County Water Authority for the production of up to 56,000 acre-feet of water per year, enough to meet the needs of approximately 400,000 people. It is a major component of the Water Authority’s multi-decade strategy to diversify the region’s water supply portfolio.

The operation of the Carlsbad desalination facility does not generate greenhouse gas emissions of any kind; however, Poseidon’s precedent-setting Energy Minimization & Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan offsets air emission’s associated with the plant’s purchase of electricity – a first for a large-scale water treatment plant in California. In the first six months of operations the Carlsbad Desalination Plant used 2 million pounds of recycled CO2 in the water treatment process, which converted the CO2 to harmless compounds and prevented an equivalent amount of CO2 from escaping to the atmosphere.  Additionally, Poseidon is developing 66 acres of new coastal wetlands and has invested $1 million to plant trees after the 2003 wild fires that ravaged Cuyamaca National Forest.

Currently, Poseidon is in the permitting process for another desalination plant in Huntington Beach. The Huntington Beach Facility will implement state-of-the-art desalination and energy recovery technologies to minimize energy consumption. One such feature is the use of a pressure exchanger-based energy recovery system that allows recovery and reuse of over 40% of the energy associated with the reverse osmosis (RO) process. Once Complete the proposed project will match the Carlsbad Plant by producing 50 million gallons of drought-proof drinking water for Orange County residents.
